Abstract:

The proportion of the geriatric population is on rise as the life expectancy of the population has increased due to advancements in medical health care technology. Accordingly, there are increased dental care needs also among the elderly population. The state of edentulousness is more likely to be apparent with the advanced age. The loss of teeth results in compromised nutritional intake. The geriatric prosthetic needs differ from a standard oral rehabilitation as it addresses elderly individuals with multiple problems as a consequence of aging. Oral health has a direct and marked influence on the general health. It affects function, esthetics, speech, food intake and social well being. It has a bearing on quality of life. Hence, prosthodontic rehabilitation of edentulous geriatric patients aims at restoring the oral functions and health in addition to adding to the quality of life. It takes into account the physiologic states associated with aging. This presentation discusses prosthodontic care in geriatric population.
