Abstract:

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is one of the best examples of two-way association that can occur between a systemic disease and an oral one, in which both diseases are mutually influential. Poorly controlled T2DM will negatively impact on already established pulp pathology. This study was focused on identifying the relationship between the pulp pathology and T2DM disease in patients from a community in South Mexico. 80 adults (16.25% male, 83.75% female) from a Clinic from the Health Secretariat-Kanasin Mexico were enrolled in this study. The clinical examination included: past treatments in dental organs: periodontal status, caries, restorations, test cavity and the last Glucose analysis, lastly, if it was the case: symptoms, duration of pain, location, stimuli, percussion, and palpation. The main reason for consulting the dental service was acute pain. Diabetic patients with metabolic control were 43.75% (26 female, 6 male) and without metabolic control 56.25% (38 female, 7 male). 60% were 40-59 years old. Pulp necrosis, irreversible asymptomatic and symptomatic pulpitis, and reversible pulpitis were the diagnoses with higher frequency. The higher number of missing teeth was five, most of the patients were female and in association with a high level of glucose; a few patients were completely edentulous. Dental area needs to integrate knowledge, ethics, sensitivity and humanism for the benefit of the patient. Our results will help to prevent complications and will bring ideas in how to improve the quality of life of the patients.
