Prevalence of intestinal parasites among home workers in Abidjan, Côte dâ??Ivoire

Abstract:

Background and Objective: Like many African countries, Côte d�??Ivoire is one of the states where the domestic employment sector remains informal. Indeed, most of the time, the social and legal protection of domestic workers are not respected by recruiters and employers. The importance of this study is to assess the general health of parasite and this socio-economic category that effectively contributes to the household balance. This study was aimed at determining the prevalence of intestinal parasites among home workers in Abidjan, Côte d�??Ivoire. Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted among 350 households in a residential area of the city of Abidjan, the main city of Côte d�??Ivoire. A questionnaire was given to domestic workers as well as officials of households. Stool of these workers were collected for parasitological analysis. Results: The results showed that the prevalence of parasitic infection is 19.32%. No multiple infections were noticed. Entamoeba coli, Endolimax nana, Necator americanus, Schistosoma mansoni and Strongyloides stercoralis were the most common infections. Conclusion: The prevalence of intestinal parasites is high among domestic workers, though a relatively small carrying high pathogenic intestinal parasites was observed. Particular attention of public authorities should be brought to the place of this socio-professional category, which is relatively modest.

AKA N’da Angbeletchi David has completed his PhD at the age of 38 years from Limoges University School of Medicine. He is the Associate researcher in the Laboratory of Parasitology-Mycology at the Abidjan University School of Medicine, Côte d’Ivoire. He has published more than 09 papers in reputed journals.
