An infection with high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV), particularly HPV16, is essential for inducing most carcinomas in anal canal and oropharyngeal area. HIV infected individuals are at increased risk for developing HPV driven cancers. Sexual practices play an important role in the acquisition of oral and anal HPV infections. Men who have sex with men (MSM) feature with the highest prevalence of anal and oral HPV. This study publishes first data about Czech HIV positive MSM patients attending the anal cancer screening program.Liquid-based cytological samples (LBC) and oral rinse and gargles of 40 HIV positive MSM were analyzed with Anyplex II HPV28 detection kit and PCR targeting E1 gene of a broad spectrum of HPV types. Additionally, Aptima HPV Assay was performed from LBC.Oral HPV infection was detected in 32,5 % and HPV16 in 5 % of the subjects. Anal HPV infection was found in 82,5 % of the subjects; 70 % of patients were infected with a high-risk HPV type and aproximately half of them presented positivity with Aptima indicating trancriptionally active HR-HPV infection. HPV16 was found in 17,5 % of individuals. Type-specific concordance between oral and anal mucousa was very low.Our data indicate that anal and oral HPV prevalence in Czech HIV-positive MSM is high, similarly to western studies of this high-risk population. Anal HR-HPV infection accompanying the suspect anal cytology will result in the further examination of the patient via colposcopy and biopsy. Currently, there is no specific management of patients with oral HRHPV infection.
