Abstract:

Introduction: Post-COVID syndrome has also been known as long COVID and is a sequel of COVID-19 infection. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence defines this as, “signs and symptoms that develop during or after an infection consistent with covid-19 which continue for more than 12 weeks and are not explained by an alternative diagnosis. In this systematic review, we analyze post-COVID syndrome, a new yet challenging matter of concern. Methodology: A systematic review was done in the months of June and July 2021 on the post-COVID syndrome seen in patients affected by COVID-19. Relevant manuscripts were extracted using Google Scholar, PubMed, and WHO. Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines were used to yield the final number of 14 articles for our study. Studies without case reports were excluded. Bias in the studies was recognized and solved after consensus with the authors. Results: 14 studies were included in our final review, which yielded 47 cases who had developed an alternative clinical diagnosis a few days after recovering from COVID-19. Mean number of days from recovery to presentation ranged between 9-122 days. Generalized myalgia, fatigue, and dyspnea were noted in all the patients post-recovery. A majority of patients were found to develop post -COVID inflammatory syndrome and pulmonary fibrosis. Interestingly, a rare condition- Antithyroid Arthritis Syndrome was also found to develop in one of the patients. Conclusion: Long COVID is a cause for major concern for clinicians as it may present vaguely and may mimic other clinical conditions. It may be concluded that SARS-CoV-2 is not just confined to the respiratory system, but has been breaking barriers of all the organ systems. A thorough study and follow-up may help in understanding the underlying cause of the development of post-COVID sequel.
