Abstract:

Panchakarma, an indispensible part of Ayurveda is widely practiced across the world for prevention and cure of various ailments. Although Panchakarma therapies have shown significant results, a lot of complications/adverse events are associated with these therapies due to a variety of factors such as inappropriate patient selection, drug, dose, instruments, operative procedures, diet and behavioral regimen etc. But they are not being reported to the competent authorities. In the case of ASU drugs, a well established pharmacovigilance system is prevailing in our country which aims at detection, assessment and causality analysis of any adverse events due to ASU drugs. Many of the adverse events in Panchakarma are either unnoticed or no due considerations are given to them as a well established system of reporting is not available as that of ASU drugs. Hence this presentation aims to arrive on some thoughts about pharmacovigilance system in Panchakarma and an attempt for monitoring Vasti karma through pharmacovigilance system is illustrated.
