Abstract:

Dental implant is one of the successful methods for the treatment of either partial or complete anodontia. However, it has a very high success rate, yet it has some complications such as periimplant mucositis and peri-implantitis. Etiology and proper diagnosis can easily help implantologists through implant selection, implant placement technique, prevention and maintenance and treatment of such a complication. Peri-implantitis and peri-implant mucositis is one of the most annoying complications for an implantologists which is if neglected or not properly treated may lead to late implant failure. Proper diagnosis of peri-implantitis depends on the anatomical structures around an implant, morphology of the bony defect, systemic condition of the patient, patient??s habits and hygiene, prosthetic design and loading protocol. Classification of bony defect around implants is one of the main guidelines for selecting the treatment surgical technique and determining the prognosis. Many factors are affecting the treatment procedures including systemic diseases and conditions, genetic and social factors, parafunctional habits and history of periodontal diseases. Implant and implant related factors has also a role in the development of peri-implantitis such as implant design, prosthetic design, implant abutment connection, mechanical failures, cement contamination and surgical errors
