Abstract:

Cancer patients are rapidly increasing worldwide, adding more responsibility to already overwhelmed hospital infrastructure. Multiple sources estimate that end of life care (EOL Care) takes up much time and manpower that would otherwise have been dedicated to other patients. However, this does not mean that patients with terminal diagnosis like cancer should be neglected or denied health care. But a dedicated and specialized facility aimed at palliative care should be the primary caregiver to these types of patients. This opinion is not without its own challenges. The level of acceptance of hospice care is much higher in western hemisphere than in eastern hemisphere. This all boils down to socio-economic-cultural values, social structure, family structure and norms. This is also dependent upon the level of education of the people in the society and their understanding level of hospice care. In the eastern hemisphere where hospitals are taken as centre for well-being and treatment, death is often taken as failure of treatment and is unacceptable to many people. Terminal diagnosis often guides the patients to hospice care and this creates a false impression to the family members of patients that the healthcare providers have “given up” upon the patient. Hospice care by definition does make the family members ponder upon the topic of death and eventual mortality, which may not be acceptable among different cultures, for entirely different reasons.
