Keynote: Dentistry

Abstract:

Music is an elective opportunity in more than 90% of US secondary schools. Many parents ask dentists whether their children should play certain wind instruments or whether orthodontics will affect their playing of these instruments. The purpose of this talk is to review what is known about the relationship of the dentition, airways and soft tissue movements with wind instrument performance. Clinicians will be given useful information that they can present to parents and their children based on a review of the literature and the results of a clinical study involving university trumpet students who consented to a survey, an evaluation of their trumpet performance, a 3D CBCT (teeth, bone and airways) and 3D stereogrammatic photographs.
