Abstract:

W ith the increase in population aging and prevalence of chronic diseases worldwide, dentists should expect to see an increase in the number of elderly patients in their practice. Teeth loss significantly impacts the quality of life especially in old age and may lead to alveolar bone resorption. Insufficient bone width can prevent proper positioning of dental implants according to the prosthesis needs and treatment planning. Mini dental implants are a highly successful implant option for patients with poor tolerance to maxillary and mandibular prosthesis with no need for ridge augmentation. The implants are relatively affordable and overall patient satisfaction is excellent. Mini dental implants have become a common treatment option for improving retention of lower dentures. Several different approaches to overdenture retention mechanisms have evolved since osseointegrated mini- implants were introduced. This presentation reviews the choices available including individual attachment, soft liners, retention sil and finally the bar that retain and splint the mini dental implants thus overcoming its previously claimed disadvantage, that they are less stable under lateral forces than conventional implants due to their smaller diameter.

Biography :

Marwa E. Sabet Sabet has successfully caught her BDS (DDS equivalent in USA) at the age of 20 years. She finished her M.Sc. in prosthodontics at the age of 25 years and her Ph.D. at the age of 28 years, from Ain-Shams University, Faculty of Dentistry. She is the course director of the prosthodontic courses, for the second and third years in both Ain-Shams and Future Universities. She has published more than 17 papers in reputed journals and supervised more than 40 master and Ph.D. theses and contributed as part of the judging committee on granting doctor degrees in both Cairo and Ain-Shams Universities.
