Abstract:

The purpose of the study was to extract the main dimensions of a healthy life style for family. This study was a survey research on 380 married male and female. All participants filled out the short form of depression, anxiety and stress scale (DASS) and marital conflicts scale. Also the participants were asked to describe their daily habits in a semi-structural interview. To analysis the data, Chi-square and independent t-test was run. The results showed that there are five important factors in healthy life style: Time for playing, time for emotional interaction, private time with spouse, less usage of cellphone, and reciprocal respect between spouses. The research showed that, those families that have these habits in their daily life style, have a high level of mental health and low level of marital conflicts. In second part of the study, a healthy family life style scale was developed and a randomized pretest-posttest, with control group design was used to check the effectiveness of life style training as an intervention for families. During the study, members of experimental group reinforce to have a new life style for their family by designing time for playing, time for emotional interaction, privet time with their spouse, and decreasing cellphone usage. The life style, mental health and marital conflicts were measured after training. The ANCOVA test revealed that there are significant differences between experimental group and control group. In the other words, experimental group in comparison with control group has a greater mean in DASS (an index for mental health) and a lower mean in marital conflicts scale. In sum, the results showed that life style plays an important role for individual and family mental health.

Siamak Samani has completed his PhD from Shiraz University. He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology, Shiraz Branch, Islamic Azad University. Also, he is the Manager-In-Charge and Co-Editor-In-Chief of the Journal of Psychological Models and Methods. He has published more than 100 papers in reputed journals and has been serving as an Editorial Board Member of Family Research Journal. He has developed Family Process and Content Model. Also, he is a Member of Family Core Group in Shahid Beheshti University.
