Abstract:

Statement of the problem: the concept of emotional intelligence was popularised in the 1990’s and has been widely researched over the last 30 years, with the emergence of three dominant approaches ability and trait and competency. Several theoretical models have attempted to integrate these models but there is a lack of consensus as to whether they operate in parallel or in sequence and in which order they may occur. One reason for this may be a continued lack of differentiation between the components within the trait and competency models collectively referred to as emotional efficacies. Methodology & theoretical orientation: In this paper it is argued that one of these components attitudes should be separated from the behavioural traits and competencies of EE. It is proposed that attitudes and an attitude-based approach to EI/EE present several potential advantages that also address concerns with current models of EI/EE. These include Findings: First, the inclusion of implicit and explicit attitudes within integrated models of EI/EE would support the dual-processing of conscious and automated processes. From this, an attitude-based dual processing framework for EI/EE is recommended. Second the concept of Unconditional Positive Regard (UPR) for self and others is identified as a potential attitude that may underpin the two core pillars of intrapersonal and interpersonal EI/EE. Third UPR attitudes would provide an ethical basis for EI/EE that may support ethical and prosocial behaviour. Fourth, UPR attitudes may differentiate between the optimal and sub-optimal elements of EI/EE. Fifth an attitude-based approach to EI/EE may be more aligned with EI/EE being developmental than are the more static ability or trait-based models of EI/EE.
