Abstract:

Objectives: To describe and identify the use of Osteopathic Manipulative Diagnostic Screening and Treatment (OMM) procedures for Oral Health, including Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) and Orofacial Pain. Describe and identify relevant neuromuscular components of the normal and abnormal TMJ. Increasing the IPE experiences between the Dental School (ATSU/ASDOH) and the Osteopathic Medical School (ATSU/SOMA) for students, faculty, and practitioners helps demonstrate how teaching and treating as a TEAM assists patients. Methods: Collaboration between the Dentist and the Osteopathic Physician helps achieve mutual goals and optimal healthcare for the patient. Successful outcomes motivate both the dentist and the osteopathic physician to learn more about each other�??s skill and knowledge base. Ultrasound imaging of the normal anatomy will be illustrated. The learning of a common skill like ultrasound imaging of the neuromuscular components promotes learning relevant anatomy, and fosters a common language that promotes life-long communication by this shared experience. Results: Attendees will see how the collaboration (IPE/IPC) can assist students and practitioners in becoming more aware of treating patients in Teams, and learning techniques from other team members. Students and faculty from our Osteopathic Medical and Dental Schools �??Team Treat�?� dental patients with TMDs and utilize OMM and Cranial Manipulation to control post treatment discomfort. Conclusion: By utilizing the Core Competencies for Inter-Professional Collaborative Practice (IPE/IPC); students, faculty, and practitioners from both the medical and dental professions will have a greater understanding of each profession, and can assist each other in the treatment of patients to improve �??whole person health�?�.

Biography :

Leonard B Goldstein serves as A. T. Still University’s Assistant Vice President for Clinical Education Development, Professor of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine at the ATSU School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona (SOMA) and Professor of Dentistry at the ATSU Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health (ASDOH). He has earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Case-Western Reserve University and PhD from the City University of Los Angeles. Immediately following graduation from dental school, he served in the US Army as a Captain in the Dental Corps during the Viet Nam Conflict. Prior to joining ATSU, he was the Director of Clinical Education and Associate Professor of Family Medicine at the NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine from 2005-2014. He has published over seventy (70) peer-reviewed articles and has spoken at national and international medical and dental education conferences.
