Female genital mutilation (FGM) might take different forms from mild to more serious procedures. Internationally, FGM is recognized as a violation of human rights as it can lead to serious short- and long-term effects on the health and wellbeing of women. Patients with FGM come into contact with the health care system for various reasons including pregnancy and childbirth, or more complex conditions due to long-term complications. In countries where the practice has emerged only recently, care of these women can create dilemmas for health-care providers. When facing FGM, physicians and nurses are not only confronted to a medical issue but also to an ethically and culturally sensitive issue. Only a better understanding of the social and cultural aspects that surround FGM by health professionals, coupled with medical knowledge and scientific skills, would help ensuring appropriate medically competent and culturally sensitive health care provision.
