Abstract:

Gummy smile is a developmental or acquired deformity affecting the area around the teeth. It is a condition in which there is an overexposure of the maxillary gingiva from 3 to 4mm when smiling. The etiological origins related to this unattractive excessive gingival display involve dento-periodontal (impaired passive eruption and gingival enlargement), cutaneo-mucosal (upper lip hyperfunction) and alveolo-skeletal (vertical maxillary excess and anterior dentoalveolar extrusion) characteristics. The appropriate treatment depends on accurately diagnosing the cause to harmonize teeth shape and reconstruct the gingival aspect. In our periodontal practice, correcting gummy smile is a prime assessment objective in agreement with patient expectations. Gingivectomy is one of the optimal forms of therapeutic procedure selected after etiology identification. The present study seeks to detail the clinical cases which calls for this surgical approach leading to the most functionally attractive and well-balanced smile.
