Abstract:

The Cannon of Medicine by Avicenna, (980-1037 A.D.) is a comprehensive and concise account of the Medicine of his time. It set the standards for medicine in Medieval Europe and the Islamic world and was used as a standard medical textbook through the 18th century in Europe. It is still used in Unani medicine, a form of traditional medicine practiced in India. Allopathic medicine at present is the generally accepted standard of care. To assess the status of Unani medical care we have critically compared the treatment of abdominal diseases in both these disciplines. We have compared the management of abdominal diseases as described in the Cannon of Medicine with the present day management by the gastroenterologist. The work has been presented under the following headings: General Principles of Treatment, Management and Diet, Drug Treatment, Nature of The Affected Organ, Indications and Methods of Elimination, General Rules and Mode of Action of Emesis and Purgation, Rules For Purgation, Excessive Purgation And The Time For Its Stoppage, Treatment of Excessive Purgation, Management of Ineffective Purgation, Emesis, Enema, Causes of Obstruction And Narrowing Channels, Signs of Blockage And Obstruction, Effects of Food and Drinks, Description of Waters, Effect of Retention and Depletion, Stools, Signs of Reeh, Causes of Dyspepsia and Fullness, Small Stomach, The Role of Stomach In Neurological Disorders, Digestion Process and Causes Of Indigestion, Abdominal Bloating. A critical commentary will help the present day physicians practicing Unani medicine to understand the drawbacks and make appropriate changes in their approach and offer proper care to their patients. It will also enable the gastroenterologists to pick up some useful concepts from the Unani system to improve the care of their patients especially those suffering from functional disorders of the gastrointestinal tract.
