Abstract:

Iron is a vital element in all aerobic organisms, and it plays critical role in pregnancy owing to the increased demand for blood for the growing foetus and placenta. It assessed deficiency anaemia in pregnancy, dietary practices and influencing factors among pregnant women in CHUK Hospital adopted descriptive survey approach on the pregnant antenatal care clinic services among 93 respondents from 121 attendants. Involved use of primary and secondary data collected through systematic reviews, records and survey. The validated tool used to seek required information and generated data findings that admit socioeconomic influence with p-value of 0,006129 in proportion of women in the study with iron deficiency anaemia, similar statistical significant relationship 0.029136 was found with dietary practices in proportion of women in the study with iron deficiency anaemia. Recommendation that community health workers and other health stakeholders to strengthen testing for iron deficiency anaemia in different community health services delivery centres. Institute appropriate programme regime for combatting the deficiency, as pregnancy period might be too short period to manage iron deficiency anaemia. Further engage on broad sensitization to provide women of child bearing age with necessary dietary guide and resources for good and healthy nutrient intake.

Chinenye Mercy N completed her PhD in Public Health from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Kenya. She is currently MPH program coordinator of the department of Community Health of KABSOM. She has more than 10 publications in health and related subject matter. She participated in curriculum review, peer reviews and presentation.
