Abstract:

Within the past few years tooth colored materials have become increasingly popular and in many cases patients are asking for such restorations. The purpose of this in vitro study is to compare the fracture resistance of class II cavities restored with composite, composite-glass ionomer to those restored with partial replacement of amalgam with composite. 60 intact premolars were selected and randomly divided into five groups of 12: The two control groups were intact teeth (negative control), and MOD preparation only (positive control). The remaining three experimental groups were: Composite resin; combined glass ionomercomposite and; combined amalgam-composite. After thermo cycling, fracture resistance was measured using an Instron universal testing machine. Data were analyzed statistically using one-way ANOVA and Tukey tests (α=0.05). The results indicated that there were significant differences between G1 and all the other groups except for G3 (p=0.67) and between G2 and all the other groups except for G5 (p=0.09). Fracture strength in G3 also differed significantly compared to G5 (p<0.05). However, the differences between groups three and four and groups four and five were not significant (p>0.05). In conclusion, the only restorative system that restored the resistance to fracture of teeth to levels similar to that of the intact group was composite.
