Emergence of ciprofloxacin resistant Salmonella enterica serotype Kentucky in Delhi, India during 2012-2014

Abstract:

Aim & Objective: To study the non typhoidal Salmonellosis among diarrhoea cases and to co-relate the drug resistance of Salmonella enterica serotype Kentucky an etiological agent and its emerging trend. Materials & Methods: During 2012-2014 we have isolated 24 cases of Salmonella enterica serotype Kentucky from stool samples of patients admitted in Maharishi Valmiki Infectious Diseases Hospital, Kingsway Camp, India. Rectal swab samples were processed as per WHO guidelines. Antimicrobial sensitivity and MIC of all 24 Salmonella enterica serotype Kentucky isolates was carried out by Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method using commercially available 10 antibiotic disks and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was carried out by agar dilution method as per CLSI guidelines, 2013. Results: All 24 Salmonella enterica serotype Kentucky were serologically confirmed Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Kentucky according to White-Kauffmann-Le Minor scheme. All Salmonella enterica serotype Kentucky were 100% sensitive to amikacin followed by cefotaxime, ceftriaxone, chloramphenicol, gentamicin and imipenem and 100% resistant to ciprofloxacin followed by ampicillin, nalidixic acid and norfloxacin. The MIC of ciprofloxacin resistant isolates was ranging from 8 μg/ml to �?�64 μg/ml and ampicillin �?�512 μg/ml for all resistant isolates. Conclusion: The common use of fluoroquinolones including ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin and nalidixic acid in chicken may have contributed to its rapid spread in this region. In 2012, sudden emergence of S. enterica serotype Kentucky clone requires monitoring of all cases for confirmation and testing of antimicrobial resistance. Heightened awareness and coordinated approach by National and International health, food and agriculture authorities is necessary to implement measures to monitor and limit the spread of this strain.
