Abstract:

Immunological properties of adult stem cells allow the treatment of autoimmune diseases such as diabetes newly diagnosed type 1. The mechanisms of action of stem cells have been described in vitro experiments. Our clinical experience in the use of autologous bone marrow stem cells show promising results that confirm the expectations generated by animal research. The negativization of insulin, GAD and pancreatic islets antibodies is accompanied by a significant increase in peptide c and a sustained decrease in daily insulin use in 90% (9/10) of patients treated with this technique. These clinical changes are observed after four months of treatment and persisted at 18 months follow-up. We believe that this clinical experience should be the base for the development of an early treatment of newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes.
