Abstract:

Chronic pain is defined as a pain present for more than 3 or 6 months in duration and present for more than the normal healing time. Chronic pain affects the sleep patterns and these patients have various medical and psychological comorbidities, including mood and anxiety disorders, secondary medical problems related to inactivity and weight gain, and sleep disturbance. The relation between the prevalence of Chronic pain and disturbed sleep is important to realize early on in the treatment of the patient, as first it has to be established if pain is leading to disturbed sleep pattern or vice versa. This is important as disturbed sleep due to any cause can lead to increased pain and chronic pain patients can have altered sleep patterns such as insomnia. This is also true from a Dentists standpoint and is worthy of discussion as Dentists can play an imperative role in early identification and management of facial pain and sleep disturbances like Obstructive sleep apnea. Especially, now since there is more awareness both at the level of patients and the clinicians, about the sleep disorders such as Obstructive sleep apnea and Chronic Pain, it is important to manage these cases from a multidisciplinary approach involving such as Sleep MD, PCP, Psychologists, Pain specialists, dentists with the patient as the core component.
