Comparative hypoglycemic effect of aqueous vs. alcoholic extract of Cinnamomum cassia in diabetic mice

Abstract:

In diabetes body fails to process the food to use in form of energy. After intake of food, it gets converted into glucose. In several studies it is found that diabetes is more dominant in urban areas than rural areas due to modern lifestyle. In 2013, surprisingly 382 million people were estimated to have diabetes around the world. In 2007, about 40 million people had diabetes in India and this number is predicted to rise to almost 70 million people by 2025. Diabetic model were prepared in two groups of mice by intraperitoneal administration of single dose of alloxan 130 mg/kg b.w. aqueous and alcoholic extract of Cinamomum cassia given to two groups of diabetic mice 50 mg/kg b.w/daily for three months. After the scheduled treatments, mice were sacrificed. Blood were collected for biochemical test and tissue for histological study. In diabetic group of mice urea, uric acid, createnine were increased many folds. Diabetic group followed by administration of aqueous extract of Cinamomum cassia show effective restoration in biochemical parameters than alcoholic extract of Cinamomum cassia administered group. Thus it is evident from study that aqueous Cinamomum cassia acts effectively against diabetes in comparison to alcoholic extract. It restores blood sugar like normal and nephrotoxicity and hepatotoxicity were not observed in aqueous cinnamon administered group. Aqueous extract of cinnamon acts effectively on both biochemical and histological parameters. It indicates that the polar component of cinnamon acts well against diabetes.

Ashima Thakur has completed her Msc Zoology from DSB Campus Kumaun University Nainital in 2011. She is currently pursuing her Research Training at Mahavir Cancer Sansthan at Patna under the supervision of Dr. Ranjit Kumar.
