Abstract:

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the fourth most common malignancy, accounting for 10% of all new cancer cases. Twenty-five percent of patients are diagnosed at an advanced stage, with a five-year overall survival rate of only 14%. Routine CRC screening is recommended for adults at average risk beginning at the age of 45 because it is a common and preventable cancer. Various screening techniques, with different sensitivity and specificity, are currently in use, ranging from stool-based testing to radiologic tests and visual endoscopic examinations. Biomarkers also play a crucial role in determining the recurrence of CRC. This study provides an overview of all the available screening options, including biomarkers for CRC detection, as well as the benefits and challenges encompassing each screening modality.
