Abstract:

India, with its ever-growing healthcare demands and other demographic challenges, is still struggling with the three prerequisites of universal healthcare program ??? accessibility, affordability and quality. Whereas, developments in technology have made healthcare more accessible but quality still remains unrequited. Most private healthcare providers, atleast ones in tier 1and tier 2 cities have adopted foundational technologies such as hospital information systems (HIS), enterprise resource planning (ERP) software, RFID asset tracking and the integration of pharmacies with HIS to bring in more operational efficiencies and provide good customer experience. HIS stores capture and manage the information related to individual???s health and activities of an organisation with in a health sector. The objective of this study is to provide a clear picture of the implementation challenges of HIS within the context of India. To achieve this objective, after an exhaustive study on existing literatures regarding HIS, four factors such as financial, educational, infrastructural and organizational with 16 variables have been identified. One of the multi criteria decision making (MCDM) technique i.e., fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (FAHP) has been developed to identify the dominant factors and variables that are playing the role of most important challenges in terms of implementing HIS. These factors are validated with 42 experts from different domains of healthcare who have adequate knowledge about HIS with decision making experience. The use of FAHP is to calculate the weights of identified factors as well as variables according to the experts??? opinion. Here fuzzy AHP has been identified as the best possible challenges compared with other factors and variables. The results from the calculation depicts that the financial and educational challenges are more likely to be taken into account in terms of implementation of HIS whereas, huge capital investment, low government funding, low education standard and lack of awareness about quality health care are the important causes of the challenge in implementing HIS.
