Abstract:

Background: Cancer is one of the most common causes of morbidity and mortality today. With all the advanced education there are different beliefs about risk factors of the cancer which can lead people to manage it by traditional and religious methods, which can cause delay in following up with hospital management in the right time. Objective: To study the false information and beliefs of inhabitance in Saudi community about cancer and to determine the knowledge in Saudi community about malignant disease, their causes and treatment. Method: Observational, cross sectional study carried out in the form of a survey. The convenient sample of 155 female educated was selected in this study aged 18 years or more. Result: Generally, the level of knowledge about risk factors associated with cancer found to be at moderate level of knowledge. The knowledge and beliefs of educated Saudi females showed significant associations with some background factors such as educational level, familial history of cancer and source of information. Conclusion: This survey provided information about knowledge on cancer at community level. It also provided useful background information for educators and policy makers that are necessary for guidance towards better cancer awareness program in this region. It is important to conduct mass media campaign in order to clarify the difference between proven and non-proven risk/protective factors of major cancers.

Shayma Abdulwasea Asrar, medical intern graduated from Almaarefa Colleges, from Riyadh, kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Very conscientious and hardworking physician with great ambition to make better difference in the medical community. She is interested in medical research field that would increase people knowledge and affect their behavior toward better health and life. She is participating in some ongoing researches, one of them published at European Journal of Pharmaceutical and Medical Research, about Beliefs and knowledge about cancer among educated Saudi women in Riyadh city. She enjoys helping others and volunteering in health related and non-health related events and companies. She was a volunteer in 10 KSA event for Brest Cancer, which was held in Riyadh and entered into the Guinness Book of World Records for world's largest breast cancer awareness ribbon formed by people at 2015. She plans to be more than just a regular doctor in the future.
