Abstract:

Statement of the Problem: Food hygiene practices play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and quality of food consumed by the public. The principle of food hygiene implies that there should be minimal handling of food items. Food handlers are thus expected to observe proper hygiene and sanitation methods as the chances of food contamination largely depend on their health status and hygiene practices. The central problem addressed by this study is what is the current level of food hygiene practices among food handlers in Lisaluwa market Ondo. This overarching problem encompasses several key subproblems and aspects that require exploration. The study aims to systematically investigate and evaluate the current level of food hygiene practices among food handlers operating within the context of the market. The purpose of this study is to generate valuable insights into the current state of food hygiene practices among the food handlers in Lisaluwa market. The findings are expected to contribute to informed decision-making, potential policy recommendations, and the development of targeted interventions aimed at improving food safety, protecting public health, and enhancing the overall quality of food handling practices within the market. Methodology & Theoretical Orientation: The study design was cross-sectional descriptive. Random sampling technique was used to select 110 respondents. Data was analysed using descriptive statistics inferential statistics, frequency table and percentages of the study variables. Findings: 93 (85%) of food handlers have knowledge as regards food safety practices. However, 67 (61%) of respondents lacks awareness that poor hygienic practices can cause illness to the populace. Conclusion & Significance: The study has significant implications for public health, policy-making, consumer awareness, the local economy and education. By addressing the identified gaps and implementing appropriate interventions, Ondo State has the opportunity to enhance food safety standards and improve the well-being of its residents.

Presently a Senior Technical Officer Strategic Information at the Science Unit of US CDC Nigeria implementing partner APIN Public Health Initiatives Headquarter. I am also an Instructional Facilitator/Project Supervisor and examiner at National Open University of Nigeria and Local Guide at Texila American University Nicaragua South America.
