Assessment of drug interactions in discharged patients of a secondary care referral hospitals in India

Abstract:

About 5% of all Adverse Drug Reactions in hospitals are caused by drug-drug interactions, majority of which are avoidable. Change of medication, addition of new drugs during a hospital stay and a lack of therapeutic care after discharge are among the most important risk factors for drug related problems. The aim of the six months prospective study was to evaluate the occurrence of DDI in patients getting discharged from a secondary care referral hospital in south India. Prescribed drugs from 91 patients at discharge were analysed for interactions using databases of clinical pharmacology, drugs.com. By using this data the occurrence of drug -drug interactions are calculated. The no. of patients of age group of <1 are 8, 1-12 are 38, 13-18 are 6, 18-60 are 36, >60 are 3. Among all patients 51 interactions have been found from stockleys, 51 interactions have been found from Medscape, 35 interactions have been found from drugs.com, 67 interactions have been found from clinical pharmacology database. Drug interaction programs for the detection of DDI, combined with pharmacological expertise, as well as the knowledge of important patient-related risk factors, may be valuable for decreasing the number of potentially harmful drug-combinations, and therefore contribute to an increase in patient safety. A close collaboration between treating physicians and clinical pharmacists can help to prevent and manage the risks related to drug therapy.

Ushanandini T pursuing Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree in Raghavendra Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (RIPER), Anantapuramu, Andhra Pradesh. She has participated and presented papers in the field of pharmacy practice in nearly 6 national and international conferences. She is a member of various professional organizations like IPA, ISPOR - India Andhra Pradesh chapter. As a part of organizing committee organized national and international conferences on behalf of ISPOR India - Andhra Pradesh chapter.
