Abstract:

Misuse and overuse of antibiotics have given rise to bacteria fully adapted to the antibiotics designed to kill them. Antibiotic resistance is now a real and serious global health threat. This lecture describes how antibiotic resistance occurs and discusses the crucial need for a proper antibiotic stewardship program in the dentistry. Dentistâ??s knowledge and behaviors regarding antibiotic use will be addressed, challenges faced and clinical tips for responsible antibiotic prescribing will be discussed. Course outlines are: Threat of antibiotic resistance; modern medicine at risk, CDC antibiotic resistance report, the human toll of antibiotic resistance, driving factors of antibiotic resistance, a new approach to combatting resistance, get smart: know when antibiotics work and current prescribing patterns.
