Abstract:

Activated Carbon (AC) was used as a support to prepare a new type of solid crude oil desulfurizer. The impact of synthetic conditions such as pretreatment agent, impregnation conditions, and calcination temperature were investigated. The effect of the structure of the desulfurizer on the performance of desulfurization was also investigated. The prepared solid desulfurizer was used for Saudi Arabian crude oil desulfurization in a 250 mL flask with a mass ratio of 30:1 (crude oil: desulfurizer) at 50°C for 2 h. The desulfurization results showed that the maximum desulfurization rate (wt.%) of NC-AC is 32.45%. Considering the maximum desulfurization rate (wt.%), the optimal synthetic procedure of the solid desulfurizer is that the activated carbon pretreated by nitric acid (68 wt.%) for 4 h was impregnated in a sodium hydrogen carbonate (NaHCO3) solution of 0.02 g/mL at 35°C for 2 h. The solid adsorbent desulfurizer of Na2CO3/activated carbon was prepared after calcination of NC-AC at 500°C for 4 h.
