Abstract:

Abstract : Recession is one of the most common clinical findings across the races. Faulty tooth brushing, local deposits, orthodontic appliances are few of the reasons for denuded teeth. A plethora of treatments including free gingival grafts, guided tissue regeneration, coronally advanced flap or coronally advanced flap with connective tissue graft have been used in the past to treat recessions. Most of these treatment modules have a very low predictability. Lasers have entered the field of dentistry a decade back and have applications for different soft tissue procedures. Thus, laser biostimulation was used in the present case in addition to coronally advanced flap procedure to increase the predictability. A 37 years old female patient presented to the Department of Periodontology, Krishnadevaraya College of Dental Sciences, Bangalore, India with a chief complaint of bleeding gums and root sensitivity. Upon examination Miller`s Class II recession was seen in relation to 24. The subject did not have any systemic conditions which precluded surgery. A basic nonsurgical therapy was carried out and patient was recalled after 2 months. After explaining the procedure in detail, a verbal and written informed consent was obtained. Following the normal surgical protocol, a coronally advanced flap procedure was done with laser irradiation to the inner surface of the flap and on the sutured surface. A GaAlAr laser was used in the biostimulatory mode. Postsurgical instructions and medications were given. Conclusions: It could be concluded that laser biostimulation can contribute positively and improve the overall results of coronally advanced flap procedure for root coverage.
