Abstract:

Background: In developing country like India, Neonatal Mortality contributes majorly to death among children younger than 5 years. This study was undertaken to determine the rate and causes of neonatal deaths among the neonates admitted to Tertiary care Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital [MGMH], Warangal. Materials and methods: It is a prospective observational study. The data was collected from the case sheets of neonates admitted into the NICU who have been referred from the Government hospitals and other peripheral centers from March 2014 to May 2014. Results: Neonatal mortality rate was 16.58 per 100 live births. 48.93% deaths occurred in Full-term babies with Appropriate gestational age. 5.31% of the deaths occurred on first day of life (i.e., Day 0), 71.27% deaths occurred during 1-6 days of life, 10.64% of deaths occurred during 7-13 days of life and 8.51% occurred during 14-27 days of life. Of the total deaths the primary causes of death were respiratory distress 42.55% (RR=1.070; CI=0.7365-1.553; P=0.731), sepsis 28.72% (RR=- 0.6309, CI=0.417-0.9543; P=0.027) and low birthweight 23.4% (RR=1.121; CI=0.7889-1.869; P=0.398) and hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy 21.28% (RR=1.110; CI=0.709-1.738; P=O.667). The associated risk factors were Neonatal jaundice (RR=-0.69; 95% CI=0.3944-1.192; P=0.195); Congenital abnormalities (RR=1.171; 95% CI=0.6308-2.175; P=0.681). Conclusion: Neonatal mortality rate is very significant in the neonates admitted to MGM Hospital. Improving skills on antenatal care in mothers and improving institutional deliveries with improving good skills in neonatal resuscitation,treatment, health interventions and care seeking behavior may descrease the rate of neonatal death.
