In developing countries like Pakistan IT infrastructure in healthcare facilities is either non-existent or fragmented. We built an electronic health record system (EHRs) that will not only ensure unprecedented access to detailed clinical information from a multitude of sources but also provide a platform for medical research and decision-making. The interface for the EHRs not only makes patient data easily searchable and accessible but also helps in understanding the etiology of a disease and medical history of the patient. One of the most challenging issues in developing EHRs is interoperability across various health information systems. We have developed a cloud-based EHR using J2EE framework, using the concept of middleout approach. The system facilitates data mining to search for patient data and visualization to display the data in easily understandable formats. Health level seven standards are implemented to ensure interoperability across systems.
