Abstract:

Mental health is fundamental to personal, community and socio-economic development. On this basis, the promotion, protection and restoration of mental health is a vital concern of individuals, communities and societies throughout the world. No health without mental health (WHO) emphasizes that mental health is integral to overall well-being and cannot be separated from physical health. The prevalence of mental health disorders in India has risen steadily in recent years, contributing to the escalating public health concern. An estimated 150 million persons in India require mental health interventions and care. The current mental health systems suffer from deficiencies, gaps, challenges, fragmentation, and a lack of coordination among all components of mental health care and services. The treatment gap for mental disorders ranges between 70 to 92% for different disorders, with more than half of those affected unable to access appropriate services. This treatment gap is further widened due to scarcity of trained human resource, psychotropic medication at primary health care level, lack of awareness and fear of being ostracized by the community. It is well acknowledged that no single solution can provide complete and / or quick results. The setting up of Ayushman Aarogya Mandirs (AAMs) has improved the accessibility of healthcare for majority of the Indian population residing in underserved rural areas. With mental health now being part of the Comprehensive Primary Health Care (CPHC), the continuum of care approach will ensure AAM as the first point of contact for patients with mental illness for seeking care, counselling and referral services, and linking patient to next level of care in the health care delivery system.
