Soundarapandian Kannan, PhD
Professor and Head, Zoology
Periyar University, India

Biography

Soundarapandian Kannan obtained his PhD in 1998 under the supervision of Prof. G. Archunan at the Bharathidasan University, working on Histomorphology Biochemistry and Chemical identification of rat scent glands in relation to rodent pest management: A New light In IPM Programme and in 2012 he completed his another PhD under the supervision of Prof. M. Krishnan at the Bharathidasan University, working on Molecular Cloning and Proteomic Analysis of Mouse V2Rx Receptor. In 2013, he joined the Department of Zoology, Periyar University, as Professor and Head and serving in the position till date. His research interest contributes in development of enhanced smart gene/drug delivery system to target cancers which is appreciable. The preliminary study mainly focus on development of therapeutic agents for lung and breast colon, cervical cancers, with enzyme targets, namely cytosolic phospholipase A2α (cPLA2α) and Cyclooxygenase (potential cancer biomarkers). He was the recipient of CSIR-SRF and awarded in March 1995-July 1998 and also persuing as UGC-BSR-Mid Career Award from 2021 to 2023.

Research Interest

Dr. S. K research group contributes in development of enhanced smart gene / drug delivery system to target cancers which is appreciable. The preliminary study has mainly focused on development of therapeutic agents for lung and breast colon, cervical cancers, with enzyme targets, namely cytosolic phospholipase A2α (cPLA2α) and Cyclooxygenase (potential cancer biomarkers). Later the enzyme-targeted prodrugs namely Phytochemicals and cancer antibiotics are significantly loaded into metal nanoparticles for antibody mediated drug delivery in cancer cells. The main objective of our lab is to target cancer at proteomic and sub-cellular level. In this context, our team rigorously investigates the impact of nano-formulated drugs/gene or siRNA on cell cycle, cell proliferation and cell viability with special attention on cell organelles like endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria, nucleus etc. Our recent attempts not only looking for the best nano-cores for drug delivery to target cancers but also exploit our expertise to develop theranostic agents to kill even drug resistant cancers like Triple Negative breast cancer. On the other hand the team led by Prof. Kannan is very keen in understanding the role of fabricated biomaterials in wound healing and delivery of drug against diabetic retinopathy and Alzheimer like neurogenetic disorders. As a token of respect in conservation biology, our lab is also working on Animal Pollinators and submicroscopic Zooplanktons (Works are guided at Master’s Level).
