Biography

Prof. Shahida Hasnain is an eminent scientist and HEC National Distinguished Professor. She has done her doctorate from Birmingham University, U.K. in the field of Microbial and Molecular Genetics in 1985. Later she completed her post-doc from same university in Molecular biology. Currently she is working as Dean Faculty of Life Sciences in the University of the Punjab, Lahore, Pakistan. She has more than 34 years of research and teaching experience in the field of Botany, Microbiology and Genetics. She remained chairperson of Botany Department and founder of Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics. She played vital role in formulating and organizing syllabi for different graduate and post graduate levels. She has more than 250 articles in various national and international journals. So far she has produced 26 PhDs and currently guiding 10 scholars. About 16 M. Phil. and 92 Master students completed their research under her supervision. She is member of editorial boards of various national and international journals.

Research Interest

Her main research interests are environmental and agricultural microbiology. Use of microbes for bioremediation of heavy metal polluted sites and salt affected soils. In agriculture biotechnology, use of microbes in enhancing plant growth and crops yield. In medical biotechnology, on one hand she is conducting research on new bioactive compounds from local microflora and on other hand she is looking for the SNPs involved in various genetic disorders.
