Biography

Dr. Rudy A. Hartskeerl, is molecular microbiologist and head of the WHO/FAO/OIE and National Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Leptospirosis and as such has gained considerable experience and knowledge on all aspects of leptospirosis, including diagnosis, epidemiology, molecular biology, characterisation, and immunology. He has coordinated and is involved in a number of multi-partner international research projects with partners from developed and developing countries. He has created LeptoNet, a WHO funded website for providing on-line global epidemiological data for leptospirosis. He is past president of the International Leptospirosis Society (ILS) and member of the Subcommittee on the Taxonomy of Leptospira. His further tasks include recruitment, training and supervision of technicians and scientists, design, coordination and presentation of international courses and workshops in the Netherlands and abroad. He has conducted several short-term consultancies in Indonesia, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Mexico, India, Sri Lanka, Cuba and Philippines concerning outbreak management and the establishment of an international reference centre and of international surveillance networks

Specialized in Infectious diseases with a focus on leptospirosis research and reference tasks. Extensive experience in research and project management.

Main working experience
Molecular research on Escherichia coli, Mycobacterium spp. Microsporidia and Leptospira spp. Multi-disciplinary and multi-partner national and international research projects using molecular biological, immunological, and epidemiological research methods. Establishment of international surveillance networks, research management and management of national and international reference centres.
