Biography

Dr Barry Walker is P.I. of the Immunology and Cellular Immunity section within the Biotherapeutics group at NIBSC. The main area of interest is the study of cellular immune responses involved in protective immunity to pathogens and in particular, pathogen specific immunity elicited through vaccination with a focus on M tuberculosis, the causative organism of tuberculosis. Dr Walker established the first murine aerosol challenge facility for tuberculosis in the UK undertake evaluations of new vaccine approaches. Dr Walker provides expert guidance and advice on preclinicalclinical development of TB vaccines and is also involved on work targeted at harmonisation and standardisation of the clinical immunological assays used in TB vaccine trials. Parallel work preparing and characterising standards and reference materials for these clinical trials is also a major interest. Research Interest

Tuberculosis and the immunology of vaccines against poverty related diseases, including HIV and Malaria.
