Biography

Dr. Anthony Confer received his DVM degree from Oklahoma State University in 1972, his MS in Veterinary Pathology from Ohio State in 1974, and his PhD degree in Microbiology from the University of Missouri in 1978.  He is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists.  He has been on faculty at Oklahoma State University, Center for Veterinary Health Sciences since 1981 and is currently Regents Professor & Sitlington Endowed Chair for Food Animal Research.  He teaches veterinary and graduate students in the fields of pathology and infectious diseases, provides diagnostic pathology support for clinical cases and research, and is the Project Director for the Bovine Respiratory Disease Research Unit.  Dr. Confer served as Department Head from 1986 to 1999 & from 2004 to 2008 and as Associate Dean for Research from 1999 to 2001. His research and expertise are in immunity to Mannheimia haemolytica and Pasteurella multocida in cattle, and he has been an invited speaker internationally in the areas of bovine respiratory disease and immunity to Gram-negative pathogens. His research has been continuously supported by numerous grants from the USDA, animal health companies, and private foundations. He has served on the editorial boards of Veterinary Pathology and American Journal of Veterinary Research. He has authored 195 peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts, 12 book chapters, 4 education journal articles, 116 published abstracts, and 12 continuing education articles.  He is a member of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists, American Society of Microbiology, Conference of Research Workers in Animal Diseases, and the Veterinary Comparative Respiratory Society. His honors include Distinguished Alumnus – OSU College of Veterinary Medicine (2009), Regents Distinguished Teaching Award (2008), Oklahoma State University Eminent Faculty Award (2003), promoted to Regents Professor (2003), and Norden Distinguished Teacher Award (1987, 2002).

Role of outer membrane proteins in stimulating immunity against Gram – negative bacteria, Molecular approaches to vaccination against bovine respiratory diseases.
