Biography

Andrew Smith qualified BDS from the University of Wales College of Medicine in 1987. After a short spell in general dental practice, he took a position as a Senior House Officer and Research Assistant at Cardiff Dental Hospital and subsequently awarded funding from the Welsh Office to undertake a PhD investigating the microbial degradation of periodontal proteoglycans which was awarded in 1994.
In 1993 he was appointed lecturer in the Department of Adult Dental Care, University of Glasgow Dental Hospital during which time he gained the FDS examination from the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh. In 1995 he was appointed Lecturer and Specialist Registrar in Microbiology training at the Oral Microbiology Diagnostic Laboratory in Glasgow Dental Hospital and the Microbiology Department at Glasgow Royal Infirmary.
In March 2000 he was awarded the MRCPath in Microbiology from the Royal College of Pathologists and promoted to Senior Lecturer in Microbiology and Honorary Consultant in Microbiology NHS Glasgow & Clyde. In May 2005 he past the advanced course in sterilization technology (ACIST) run by the Institute of healthcare engineers and estate managers and is a pre-registered Authorised Person (sterilizers).
In January 2005 he was appointed the Head of  the Diagnostic Oral Microbiology laboratory (the only CPA accredited oral microbiology laboratory in the UK) and is also the lead Microbiology Consultant for Decontamination in NHS Glasgow & Clyde. He is also co-author of two text books, several book chapters and over 60 peer reviewed publications. Prof Smith sits on several local and national committee's overviewing  the decontamination of medical devices.
