Biography
Dr. Richard Zhao is currently a tenured Associate Professor of Pathology, Microbiology-Immunology and Human Virology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He is also the Division Head of Molecular Pathology and Director of the Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory at the University of Maryland Medical Center. Dr. Zhao received his B.S. degree from Shandong College of Oceanography in China, M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Oregon State University, USA. His postdoctoral training was at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University, where he also served as a Research Assistant Professor for two years. Dr. Zhao served as an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Microbiology-Immunology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and Chicago Children's Medical Research Center from 1994-2003, where he was the Director of Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory, Director of the DNA Sequencing and the co-Director of the Flow Cytometry Core Facilities. During his tenure at Northwestern University, he was named as the Bernard L. Mirkin PhD MD Research Scholar, an endowed Chair with one million dollar endowment to support his research. Dr. Zhao joined the faculty of the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 2004.
