Biography
 Vladimir Kiryukhin possesses all the aforementioned qualities, which makes him a distinguished researcher and educator in the field of regional hydrogeology. He graduated from the Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg) Mining Institute, Russia, in 1953 with a Master’s degree in hydrogeology and engineering geology. From the very beginning of his academic career he showed a strong interest in regional hydrogeology. Kiryukhin conducted his first regional hydrogeological study in 1953–1956 in the Turgai depression, which extends from the southern Ural Mountains to northern Kazakhstan. The results of the field studies were used to provide the water supply for the huge newly developed agricultural areas during that period of time.
