Biography
Dr. S. Sarwar Alam, is Principal Scientific Officer, Plant Health Group, Mutation Breeding Division, Nuclear Institute of Agriculture and Biology, Faisalabad.He completed his M.Sc. from Department of Botany, University of Karachi in 1977 and a student of Plant Pathology of Prof. Dr. A. Ghaffar. He joined Pakistan Forest Institute and worked to survey the incidence of mistletoes in Pakistan and to reduce the incidence of dwarf mistletoes in the Juniper Forest of Balochistan. After two years he joined Food Legume Improvement Programme, NARC to work on a PL-480 Project on blight and wilt diseases of chickpea. He also worked for screening of germplasm for lentil diseases and mungbean for yellow mosaic virus and leaf crinkle virus and Cercospora diseases. He also collaborated with ICRISAT, ICARDA and AVDRC. He has reported 10 new pathogens involved in losses of pulses crop in Pakistan. Dr. Alam was awarded an EEC scholarship in 1986 and completed PhD from University College London under the supervision of Dr. R.N. Strange.
Dr. Alam has participated and presented his scientific work in several International Seminar/Conferences and published about 65 Research papers in the various National/International Journals. He was Secretary of the Pakistan Phytopathological Society for two terms (1996-99) and presently treasurer of Plant Pathological Society. He participated in the First Asian Conference on Plant Pathology as member of the presidential committee in Beijing China, August 25-28, 2000. He participated as member house of delegates in the First Asian Association Society of Plant Pathology(AASPP), Beijing to approve its logos and constitution. He is Councillor of International Society of Plant Pathology.
