Biography
Dr Susannah Whitwell is a Consultant Psychiatrist at the Maudsley Hospital and Head of Education and Training for the Behavioural and Developmental Psychiatry Clinical Academic Group. She was at medical school at King’s College London and completed her core and higher psychiatry training at the Maudsley Hospital. Between 2004 and 2006, she was a Psychiatry Registrar in Australia and New Zealand. Returning to London, she received her Certificate of Completion of Training in 2010 and started her consultant post at the Maudsley in 2011. Her involvement with global psychiatry started in 2008 when she spent a month in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia teaching junior doctors. In 2009 she took over from Dr Rebecca Syed as the mental health lead for the King’s-THET-Somaliland Partnership (KTSP). In this capacity she has been to Somaliland on five occasions and has coordinated face to face teaching of psychiatry in Somaliland by UK volunteers. Since 2010, she has been increasingly involved in the distance learning programme for Somaliland students and doctors using MedicineAfrica and is currently distance-learning lead for KTSP. In 2012 she took over from Andy Leather as clinical lead for KTSP.
