The West African Ebola outbreak presented unprecedented political, epidemiological, logistical, social and clinical challenges. Environmental conditions, personal protective equipment, limited clinical equipment and therapeutics, and staff shortages made caring for critically ill Ebola virus disease (EVD) patients difficult. We reflect on our clinical experiences in caring for EVD patients, as well as the strategies employed to try and optimize clinical care in a resource-limited setting.
