Biography
HATHERILL Mark is working as a Assoc Professor in South African Tuberculosis Vaccine Initiative,e, Institute of Infectious Diseases and Molecular Medicine (IIDMM), University of Cape Town,South Africa. MBChB, DCH, MRCP, FCPaed, MMed, MD. Mark Hatherill is a Senior Clinical Researcher at the South African Tuberculosis Vaccine Initiative. He trained in paediatrics and paediatric intensive care in South Africa (Red Cross Children’s Hospital), the UK (Guy’s Hospital), and Australia (The Children’s Hospital, Westmead). His clinical research interests have focused on childhood infectious diseases and pathophysiology of critical illness. His current research focuses on refining diagnostic criteria for tuberculosis as a vaccine trial end-point and he holds an NIH grant to study diagnostic yield of sputum induction. Ongoing collaborations include a multi-centre TB drug trial (RIFAQUIN) with InterTB (St. George’s Hospital, London) He is working in School of Child and Adolescent Health, University of Cape Town, South Africa. His international experience includes various programs, contributions and participation in different countries for diverse fields of study. His research interests reflect in his/her wide range of publications in various national and international journals. He is the Editorial Board Member of Journal of Psychiatry.
Research Interest
His clinical research interests have focused on childhood infectious diseases and pathophysiology of critical illness.  Tuberculosis; Adolescents; Self-injurious behaviour; Psychosocial factors.
