  A Summary of Recent Advances in Ocular Inserts and Implants

  With the physiological and anatomical constraints put forth by the eye it is a significant challenge to the pharmaceutical scientists to target drugs to the posterior segment of the eye. Severe ocular complications such as glaucoma, uveitis, cytomegalovirus retinitis, cataracts, age related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinitis pigmentosa pose urgency for the treatment of ocular diseases. Hence novel drug delivery strategies and formulations are to be developed and explored to overcome and treat these posterior ocular disorders. At present the topical and intravitreal routes are widely used to deliver therapeutic entities to retinal tissue. Various controlled delivery systems, such as ocular inserts and implants are in the progress of development and may improve drug delivery drastically in the years to come.
