Biography
LOURENS SCHLEBUSCH is Professor and the founder and former Head of the Department of Behavioural Medicine, Nelson R. Mandela School of Medicine, University of' KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa. He is also the former Chief Clinical Psychologist in the KwaZulu‑Natal Provincial Department of Health, and Chief Consultant in Behav­ioural Medicine at various hospitals in Durban, South Africa. Professor Schlebusch is an internationally recognized authority in his areas of expertise. He is a suicidologist, medico-legal and stress management consultant. He is a member of many national and international scientific editorial boards, organizations, and societies, and is a reviewer of scientific publications both nationally and internationally. He has many professional listings, honors, and awards. He has made significant research contributions and has published widely (including several books). His research interests include various aspects of suicide prevention, traumatic stress and bridging the mind-body dichotomy in contemporary health care delivery. He was one of the vice presidents of International Association of Suicide Prevention (IASP) and the congress president for the XXIII World IASP Congress which was held on the 12-16 September 2005, International Convention Centre (ICC) Durban, South Africa. This was an outstanding congress in South Africa and was addressed by various provincial MEC’s including the MEC’s for Health and Education and the National Minister of Health in South Africa. He is also a member of the WHO Multisite Intervention Study on Suicidal Behaviour (SUPRE-MISS). He finished his educcation in B A, Hons BA (Clin Psych), MA (Clin Psych), M Med Sc (Psychiat) (Cum Laude), PhD,C Psychol (UK). FRSPH (UK). a ) Stress management and stress associated with physical disease. b ) Health-risk and self-destructive behaviour, especially suicidal behaviour. c ) The psychological and neuropsychological sequelae of trauma and head injuries. d ) Bridging the mind-body dichotomy in contemporary health care and health promotion systems. e ) Prevention of life-style diseases.
