Abstract

An Overview of Different Types of Implant Supported Dentures

Sophie Kate

The figure represents the different types of dental implants and dentures. (1) Complete Dentures: regular removable, (2) implant retained dentures: a thin metal bar that is attached by implants into the jaw bone, (3) bar retained implant supported dentures: directly attached to implants in the jawbone using attachments like a metal bar, and (4) fixed screw retained implant supported dentures: screwed into the implants, providing a denture that is fixed into the mouth like natural teeth (left to right) [1]. Dental implants are opted by patients to replace the teeth which have been removed due to certain reasons, either the teeth have rotted or broken. Therefore, instead of wearing removable dentures, permanent implants are fitted into the patient [2]. The materials that are commonly used in dental implants are either bio-inert, such as commercially pure titanium (Cp Titanium) and titanium alloy, or bio-active ceramics such as hydroxyapatite, tri- and tetra-calcium phosphate and bio-glass [3].
