Biography

Dr. David Alvarez-Ponce holds a B.S. in Biology from the University of Barcelona and a B.S. in Computer Science from the Open University of Catalonia. He also received his M.A.S. and Ph.D. in Genetics from the University of Barcelona. He was a postdoctoral researcher at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth for 2 years. Subsequently, he received a fellowship from the Spanish government (Juan de la Cierva fellowship) to conduct postdoctoral research at the Institute for Plant Molecular and Cell Biology in Valencia, Spain. In 2014, he was appointed as an Associate Professor at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Research Interest

Research in the Alvarez-Ponce lab focuses on the evolution of genes and genomes, and how this evolution is influenced by natural selection. Typically, large amounts of genomic data are interrogated to address fundamental questions. Areas of particular interest include the rates of protein evolution and their determinants, the factors promoting adaptive evolution, and the evolution of biological networks.
