Medical care for elderly people in the so-called “terminal phase” is a major concern for both medical professionals
and social communities. In this report, discussions at three academic conferences and among my research team are
introduced based on individual case reports, in addition to presentation of my bioethical personal views: Longevity
is determined by “heaven”, A family’s intentions should not be accepted without questioning, A comprehensive
consensus-building process is needed as part of the double roles of physicians, and medical life and dignity principles
